Blog Post #3

I knew a lot about my field, but I was able to expand that knowledge and learn more about what to expect as far as being a Psychologist from the Occupational Outlook Handbook (majority of facts gathered were from 2018). $79,010 per year/ $37.99 per hour are listed as the median salary. The education that is required is a doctorate level degree. From personal knowledge and not this handbook I know that can be a Ph.D. in Psychology and Psy. D. There are about 181,700 jobs out there. The projected growth rate is 14% from 2018-2028. This is due to the ever-growing mental health needs of this country. PA also has a much bigger need for Psychologists compared to most states. While there are an array of different Psychologists, I would like to be a Clinical Psychologist with a focus on Child/ Adolescent Mental Health. As stated in the Occupational Outlook Handbook, Clinical Psychologists deal with an array of issues. They can deal with short term or long-term patients. They have the ability to diagnose issues. A few states even allow Clinical Psychologists to prescribe medication. Out of all the categories self employed Psychologists make up about 29% of the population. This was useful to know, because I plan to have my own practice. My goal would be to have roughly 15 children/adolescents on my caseload. Anderson’s Ted Talk reminded me to remain humble, but open. This was do in part to her saying that everyone is better than someone at something. I feel it is very important to keep an open mind. While we might not like an individual’s certain belief we shouldn’t shut them out, because we could be shutting down an opportunity for ourselves. I whole heartedly believe she is accurate in all she speaks throughout her Ted talk.
